All Things Become New

Updated: Aug 24, 2023

Do you love old things or do you love to purchase everything new? There are benefits to doing both. When I was growing up it was the age of yard sales. Yep, I am old. LOL, My mom would make us go through and gather clothes that didn't fit or things we did not use anymore and she would gather household items. They would never be to the point of no return if ya know what I mean. (trash) It would take days and days to get it all together and price it all. Next came setting it all up, getting up at dawn, and waiting for people to come. I do miss those days sometimes since we connected more with neighbors and it was always fun having a lemonade stand or hot cocoa stand to make me feel like a real entrepreneur.

Today it is all about Facebook Marketplace and online community large sales where I find all my treasures. Nothing excites me more than finding a quality piece of furniture or decor to add to my home. It may need a little love or a lot but the vision of how it can be used in my home or a client makes me all giddy inside.

I have been working on a few projects to set up a few guest rooms. I love all the Serena and Lilly and Ballard Designs furniture but the prices hit hard to the pocketbook. Guest rooms are wonderful to have but the majority of the time they are not used. Guest rooms should be inviting and not a hodge podge of leftover furniture you had in college or had nowhere else in the house to use them.

Here is my inspiration from Ballard Designs. The cost sale for one is $799.00

Facebook Marketplace to the rescue to get the fresh and clean look I am looking for. I picked some solid wood mahogany-colored Lane nightstands on the marketplace for my downstairs main-level guest room. I wanted it to look fresh and clean and go with the blue throughout my home. (That's my signature color if you have not guessed)

I purchased the cabinet paint I have used multiple times. It is amazing and really leaves a gorgeous finish. I chose the color, Tidal Haze. It is a true coastal blue. I also ordered the Antique White for the upstairs nightstands I purchased for the guestroom near our loft. Putting a little elbow grease and time sure is a cost-effective way to get the look you are going for and not the hefty price. (As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases on links in my blog)

Here are a few pictures of the transformation. This paint is very easy to use and the best part is they supply you with two 31 oz. cans of paint. I barely used half on the tidal blue nightstands and a little bit more on the antique white.

My favorite rub and buff to the rescue for the leg caps and the hardware. Easily changed in a matter of minutes.

While on the search for nightstands, I came across another set. I just couldn't pass them up. They are all wood and more like a small chest than a small nightstand. Exactly what I was looking for.

The color was yellowed due to age and the pulls needed some updating but the overall design fit just right for the room

These turned out to be more of a challenge. You never know what you're getting into when you are painting furniture. They were pretty dirty so I had to clean them twice. I recommend using Krud Kutter. It preps your furniture to receive the paint as well. I thought the drawers would slide right out but they had stoppers on each of them to keep them from falling out. I had to take the back of the nightstand off to get to each stopper to remove the drawers. Then it was off to painting.

You can see in this photo just how yellow the nightstands were.

It took three coats of paint to get these to have the right finish. They also had a lot more nook and crannies to cover. LOL

I added some updated drawer pulls with solid brass ones.

The upstairs bedroom is still in transition and I will share the whole reveal soon. Here is a pic of what it looks like now.

Furnishing a home can be very costly. There are items that you do not want to skimp on but guestrooms are a place with some searching and a little work can get the inspiring design you are looking for. I hope this inspires you to do some searching of your own. You might not find the right ones the first week or so but don't give up. They will pop up on Facebook Marketplace before you know it. Design requires patience and persistence.

Yes, I am in search of a new chandelier. LOL
