"Put On the Breaks"
Updated: Sep 22, 2022
When moving into a new home the wheels begin to turn on all the projects we want to tackle. "What am I going to do with that blank wall"? "I do not love the lighting and I want to replace it all". "Will our furniture fit or do we need to get something new"? Which is always a need not a want in my book.
The best advance I can give you is to "put on the breaks". You do not have to tackle it all at once and when you do that is when mistakes are made. These can be costly too. Purchasing furniture that in six months you feel does not work because you have lived in the home now and know how you will be using that room.
Get yourself a home project planner book (they have many on amazon - here is one I love)
and start laying out all your dreams for your home. I promise you as you go along these will change. What you wanted a year ago will be totally different from what you desire today. Take the time to keep track of lighting, rugs, furniture and decor items you love in your Pinterest account by category. This will be a quick search instead of going through your whole Pinterest to find that lighting fixture you remember from eight months ago. I finally started doing this and it has made recall of design a lot easier. Also, if you do not care for an item remove it from your Pinterest delete it. Sure does make it more organized.
Decorating a whole house can be daunting and make you second guess if you made the right decisions along the way. Most of us are not IG influencers who can change our kitchen pendants on a whim. When we select a light for our home we are practically married to it for a long time. That is why I am telling you to "put on the breaks". Tackle one room at a time and finish it. You will make less mistakes and will save a ton of brain power and energy.
Hope this gives you a little help when you start your design in your home and to know taking your time is actually a good thing.
