When you think of wallpaper, you probably think of the times when everyone was putting it everywhere. Floral borders were in everyone's home from the kitchen to the powder room. Waverly cornered the market with matching patterns you could use for your walls and curtains. Well, it is back and better than ever. After many years of just painting walls, I decided to jump on the wallpaper trend again. It was not a step that I took lightly because it brought back memories of large florals everywhere and a horrible experience of wallpaper in a powder room at my parent's old home with neon green and silver rings that looked like eyeballs.
So, I watched a lot of other designers incorporate the newest designs in wallpaper and decided to finally take the plunge. Here is my powder room on my first floor. It has a walk-in shower, so in designing this room I tried to pull from the gray tile. (Hubby was not allowing a gut job of the shower - LOL) So, I just worked with what we had.
Subtle or Bold
The powder room is the most popular place to add wallpaper. It can be eye-catching and sets the tone for your home plus it makes a statement. Depending on the size of your powder room you can either go with a large bold print or one that is more monotoned for a softer look. Murals are extremely popular in design right now and show like a piece of artwork on a canvas.
I designed my bathroom with a more subtle look. I have always loved toile but not necessarily the English cottage scenes in wallpaper. Trees are a design detail in art in my home and decided to carry it into the main floor powder room/bathroom. My shower is accented with gray tile and the gray tree toile wallpaper was a perfect match. Due to the fact someone would have to get ready in the bathroom I wanted to keep it light and bright. No one likes a dark bathroom when you have to put on your makeup.
Wallpaper was not the first step in the powder room design. First came a little construction to add some crown molding and box trim. This brought a lot of character to the space. Next, since I never wallpapered with traditional wallpaper before my friend Liz came over to save the day. Eight hours of fun and learning made my first true wallpaper experience joy.

Here are a few examples of wallpaper that make the powder room a place you love.
Subtle or bold - have fun in your powder room.
Murals - Murals - OH MY!
Murals continue to make a large impact in the wallpaper scene. In design, they are being used in powder rooms as well as children's bedrooms, master bedrooms, dining rooms, and even as an accent wall in a living space. One of my favorite mural styles is scenic murals. They come in every color - style, and scene. If you want a splash of color and the unexpected add one to your home (it is on my to-do list)
Here are a few examples that may give you some inspiration.
As you can see wallpaper can be tons of fun and make a statement that makes your home memorable to your guest. Think out of the box and make your home a canvas that displays your favorite color or elements.
Here are a few pictures of how the powder room design came to life. I am still waiting on a mirror. (end of reel) Ordered two and both came broken. So I punted and went with another design for my mirror and I love it even more. Now to waiting for it to arrive.
